The $100 Laptop

Nicholas Negroponte, the co founder of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made known the plans for a $100 windup-powered laptop targeted at children in developing countries.
The idea is that by the year 2007 governments will pay around $100 dolalrs for the computers and will distribute them freely to students.
So where are the computers coming from you might ask? Five companies are working together with MIT to develop an inital 5 million to 15 million test units.
Another question you may find yourself asking is if the countries are still developing where will they find the power to run these computers, and what kind of soft-ware will they come with. Well the answers to those questions may just amaze you. The design of the machine will come with a 500MHz processor, and 1 GB of memory, and a dual mode display tha can be used for color mode or black and white with sunlight readable mode. Also the software that will come installed on the computer will be the Linux operating system. They will also come with a four USB port, along with built in mesh (a sort of peer to peer networking).
The new computers will be powered by conventional electrial current batteries or by a windup crank attached to the side of the notebooks, seeing as how some of the countries may not have the conventional means of using electricity.
The proposed plan is be ready by 2007 sometime.
